Outdoor River Level Sensor & Early Warning Alarm System Deployment in Zamboanga, Mindanao

Flooding is a persistent challenge across the Philippines. In Zamboanga, Mindanao, we deployed outdoor LoRaWAN river level sensors paired with an early warning alarm system to protect lives and property in flood-prone barangays.

Flooding is a persistent challenge in many parts of the Philippines, especially in flood-prone areas like Zamboanga, Mindanao. To address this issue and safeguard the lives and properties of local residents, an outdoor river water level sensor with an early warning alarm system has been deployed. The technology is proving to be a game-changer for the community, offering real-time monitoring and timely alerts about rising water levels.

How the system works

The water level sensor is installed along the riverbank to continuously monitor the river's level. Using ultrasonic sensing, the system detects even minor changes in water level. When the level exceeds a predefined threshold, an automated alarm is triggered — an audible alert driven by a large three-phase siren.

The sensor integrates seamlessly with LoRaWAN, enabling real-time data transmission to monitoring centres. This allows local government units and disaster response teams to make informed decisions quickly, ensuring timely evacuation or other preventive measures.

Community benefits

  • Early warning for flood preparedness — critical lead time to move valuables, secure homes, or evacuate.
  • Sense of security — alerting the community before floodwaters reach dangerous levels reduces anxiety during heavy rains and storms.
  • Enhanced disaster response — real-time data helps authorities allocate resources and coordinate response efforts.
  • Long-term planning — sensor history reveals flood patterns that inform infrastructure improvements.

Why Zamboanga needs this technology

Zamboanga City has experienced significant flooding in recent years due to climate change and unpredictable weather patterns. This early warning system is part of a broader effort by local authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness and protect vulnerable communities along key rivers.

A model for other communities

The success of this project serves as an example for other flood-prone regions in the Philippines. Combining long-range LoRaWAN telemetry with community engagement ensures such systems are effective and embraced by the people they are designed to protect — keeping communities one step ahead of natural disasters.
