About the session
LoRaWAN is designed to connect sensors that send small amounts of data over long distances while consuming very little power. But long range alone does not guarantee a successful deployment — frequency settings, terrain, gateway placement, sensor selection, network architecture and cost all have to work together. Terra Hertz and Cubicore will explain how LoRaWAN works and show what a practical deployment looks like under Philippine conditions.
What we will cover
- LoRa vs. LoRaWAN — chirp spread spectrum modulation, spreading factors, and the trade-off between range, data rate and battery life
- The AS923 regional frequency plan used in the Philippines and its effect on channel use, duty cycle and practical data rates
- The complete network flow: end devices, gateways, network server and application integration
- Selecting gateways and sensors for outdoor, solar-powered and typhoon-prone Philippine sites
- Coverage-planning fundamentals and the factors that determine actual range
- A walkthrough of budgeting a deployment using a LoRaWAN cost calculator
By the end of the session you should be able to explain the basic LoRaWAN architecture, identify applications that fit the technology, and develop an initial picture of the equipment, coverage and budget required for a first deployment.
